Sidebar not even starting no matter what | Please help

Question:I defragged my hard drive last evening. Restarted, and ever since, my sidebar won't even start up. I've tried renaming the settings.ini file and restarting the application, but no dice.  Won't even start. Ironically, even in my startup programs it shows that it is supposed to start, but doesn't. So, can someone please help? I have Vista Ultimate and do not want to reinstall windows. I was considering on trying this, but not sure how to run properly this command in the prompt:

1. Right click on Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator
2. CD to C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar ( cd drive letter:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar )
3. Run these commands in this order:
1. regsvr32 -u sbdrop.dll
2. regsvr32 -u wlsrvc.dll
3. regsvr32 atl.dll
4. regsvr32 sbdrop.dll
5. regsvr32 wlsrvc.dll

Can someone help? I need my sidebar, and thank you....

Answer 1:

Hi Michael,

You may try these steps mentioned below:
- Click Start >>  All Programs >>  Accessories >> right-click Command Prompt  >> select "Run as administrator".
- Type these commands one by one:
Regsvr32 atl.dll
Regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\sbdrop.dll"
Regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\wlsrvc.dll"

Click Start >> in start search type in sidebar properties >> Enter.
Make sure that "Start Sidebar when the windows start" has a check mark against it.

You may also try SFC Scan on the computer:
Try running a SFC Scan:
1. Click on the Start menu, choose All Programs, then Accessories, then right-click on the Command Prompt item and select Run as administrator.
2. Click Continue to authorize opening a command prompt with administrative privileges.
3. Run this command in the cmd prompt: sfc /scannow
4. The cmd prompt should list text stating "Beginning system scan. This process will take some time."
5. Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes so be patient).  This command will scan all protected system files and attempt to replace incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions
6. When the scan completes, the SFC tool will indicate whether or not it found any problems and whether or not it was able to fix them
7. If any errors are reported that SFC was unable to fix, there are steps in this knowledge base article that explain how to locate and attempt to fix the errors.
8. After fixing any errors that are found, try accessing the Windows Sidebar.

If the above steps don't help then you may also try restoring the computer to the previous date on which it was working fine.
To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
3. In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
4. Click Finish.

Let us know if that helps.

After 08-12-2009 Updates processed, getting a c000021a fatal error, with 0xc0000142 error code

Question:Running XP Home, SP3 all security updates installed through 08-12-2009. After the last round of updates downloaded and processed, on reboot, the machine is in reboot loop out to a blue screen with c000012a fatal error, with error code of 0xc0000142.  Attempts to use the Repair Facility on the XP Install disk fails, as the disk does not find a valid XP installation on the machine.  Using another boot tool, I can see that all the directory structure and files are still on the C drive as they should be.  Safe Boot or attempts to go back to last known working configuration do not work either.

How do I get out of this situation?

I do have access to a registry editor at this point.

August 2009 Security Update KB971657 Problem Installing

Question:Hello, I have upgraded from Windows XP Home to Vista Home Basic. I have installed Windows Updates in the past automatically while using Vista and have not had any problems until this lastest update from Microsoft.  I had to install one at a time all updates that were listed in the 11 August 09 post. All installed successfully except for the following.

Whenever I try to update and install KB971657:

First it says the updates were successfully installed restart the computer to finish update.
Second it says configuring updates the computer will shutdown.
Third the computer restarts, comes back on and says configuring updates stage 3 of 3 do not turn off your computer.
Fourth the computer restarts loads various files and stops at a file that says 47/47 (Registry\Machines\Components)
Fifth the computer starts and says Updates were not configured correctly reverting changes do not turn off your computer.
Sixth the computer returns to the desktop with an icon in the tasktray that announces an update needs to be installed, which happens to be the same update.

Need help.

Thank-You in Advance.

[Answer]Vista SP2

Question:As SP2 contains all the past updates,  then having updated from SP1 to SP2, can I now uninstall all the past security updates since SP1 and upto SP2.
Or does the SP2 automatically uninstall these now redundant updates to free memory space?
Thanks,
Ricky

Answer 1:

Hi Ricky,

Thank you for posting your question on Windows Vista Forums.

Service Pack 2 only contains updates released after the release of Service Pack 1 and other updates for security, reliability, performance, compatibility etc.

If you have installed Service Pack 2 from Windows Update, then the past updates would have not been replaced by Service Pack 2 and only the required updates would have installed on the machine.

If you have downloaded the standalone package of Service Pack 2 on the machine and installed it, the update would have replaced the past updates on the machine and only one instance of each update will be installed on the machine.

That is the reason why any Service Pack update through Windows Update is less always in size than the update from standalone package as it checks as to what updates/patches are required to be installed and only those are installed on the machine.

So, you need not to worry that your machine has redundant copies of the same update. There will be only one copy of each update.

Hope the above information helps. Please post back and let us know.

Thanks & Regards

Background Intelligent Transfer (BITS) will not start

Question:

My updates stopped working after 11/27. The next update on 12/11 gave be an error 80246008, which points me to BITS.

I cannot get BITS to start. When I go to the Services tab and start it, it gives me Error 127: The specific procedure could not be found.

I have read a lot of articles that ultimately talk about RegSrv32-ing qmgr.dll. When I RegSrv32 qmgr.dll, I get the error:
The module "qmgr.dll" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files
The specified procedure could not be found.

I cannot figure out how to delete this file and reinstall it. I cannot do anything to qmgr.dll. It gives me Access Denied, even as administrator and even in Safe Mode with nearly every service turned off.

By following through various MS support articles and others, I seem to keep coming back to these. I have attempted to run the following:

Windows6.0-KB940520-x86-ENU - this tells me that Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) repair is not required currently.
Windows6.0-KB939159-x86 - this tells me that the Update does not apply to your system
Windows6.0-KB941600-x86 - this tells me that the Update does not apply to your system

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
Stephen in Reno

Answer 2:

I have 2 errors on my Vista system. 1. TV guide will not update (Windows Error Code: 3). 2. Windows Update fails (Error Code: 80246008). I have not been able to get Windows Update since 11/25/2008!

Doing some research I have figured out the issue (i think) - background intelligent transfer service is not running. What I have tried so far:

1. Start -> My Computer -> Manage -> Service -> BITS -> Start. When I try and start the service I get a yellow bang dialog box that says "The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service on Local Computer started and ten stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

2. I have checked and the dependent service (Terminal Services, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), System Event Notification, Windows Management Instrumentation, COM+ Event System, DCOM Server Process Launcher) ALL these services are running, automatically.

3. Downloaded Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2009 and scanned the system. No infected files found.

4. Downloaded the BITS fixup tool (Windows6.0-KB940520-x86-ENU.exe) and got an dialog box that says "BITS repair is not required currently."

5. Downloaded Windows Update Standalone Installer (Windows6.0-KB939159-x86.exe) and it simply says it's not a valid program on the machine...

Any advice on what I should do, please?

Had to upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows Vista Home Basic

Question:I need some help, about two months ago I had gotten a pretty bad virus on my Dell laptop. The virus whipped out my Pre-loaded XP OS and I had to upgrade to Vista Home Basic so I could use my computer. Now I had done the optition of keeping my old files but a few days after I installed Vista I pulled the most boneheaded move and accidently deleted the folder containing the XP files. Now I get a message that says my copy of Vista isn't genuine, which it should be I bought it from Walmart. Now here's were I need help I want to go back to XP (I still have the key) do I need to contact the manufator to get a disk since my computer didn't come with one?

Need Windows Vista Home Premium Installation Disc

Question:I do not have a windows vista home premium installation disc OEM ACT Sony Corporation. My computer got a virus and will not start in safe mode even. Can I purchase an installation disc? I have the key code.

Answer 1:http://esupport.sony.com/

Contact your Computer Manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of Vista Recovery disk/s.

They normally do that for a small $ cost.

Also, ask them if you have a Recovery Partition on your Computer/Laptop to restore it to Factory settings.

Or borrow a proper Vista DVD(not Dell, HP, etc).
A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions.
The Product Key determines which Vista version gets installed.

There are 2 Vista disks: one for 32bit Operating System, and one for 64bit Operating System.

Answer 1:

Hi Makaveli2323,

Thanks for posting.

Method 1:

Try booting into Safe mode and check if you still get stuck at startup.

The following link will provide you information about "How to start your computer in safe mode".

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/323ef48f-7b93-4079-a48a-5c58eec904a11033.mspx

If the computer shows no sign of startup problems, then perform a clean boot.

Follow the steps mentioned in the link.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Method 2:

Try performing a startup repair by booting off the vista disc. This should eliminate any startup errors.

The following link gives information about the startup repair utility.

Answer 2:

Thanks for your answer ! I will try doing those things , but the problem is not in my Vista i think.

Somewhere on the forums i read that one guy had the same problem and he disconnected his USB cabel
and that was the answer. I think i deal with something like that because i have installed XP and Vista a few times , i reinstalled them a few times also and the problem is still on.I guess it's something form the hardware that is cousing the trouble.

Do you think that is possible  and what should i do ?

What happens when I get my Official Copy?

Question:Running Windows 7 now and love it but I am thinking about reinstalling it on a Raid 0 setup for a little more speed loading (10,000 Raptor Drives) What is going to happen when I get my Official Release on Oct 22nd? Will I need to reinstall then? Can I do a clone of my drive now and then put that on my Raid 0 setup and not have to reinstall come October 22nd? Would be nice to be able to just input the new activation Key and be good to go but I seem to remember that not working with the Vista beta to official release

Answer 1:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/faq.aspx

Can I upgrade from the RC to the final version of Windows 7?

When you install the final version of Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean installation. So plan on backing up your data then reinstalling your applications and restoring your data.

WindowsUpdate error_80072ee2 PLEASE HELP ME

Question:I am having trouble downloading service pack for vista 2 and am getting the above error code. It says this is due to hi volumes on the server and to re-try in 15 minutes but have been on this for a week now. Download generally gets to 98% AND then appears to stall. This is also happening with all downloads. Attempting to download an update for Itunes and it gets to 99% and then stalls completely and will not download. Please help because i am tearing my hair out and i am not super computer savy so the simpler the language the better please. thanks much appreciated

Answer 1:Hi Taylor W,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft answers forum for Windows Vista.

Taylor, you are right. As you said, the error you get means that the Windows Update servers might be experiencing an unusually high number of requests for updates.

To work around this issue, you can try  closing Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for Windows Automatic Update to run at its next scheduled time.

If you continue to receive error 80072ee2, you might need to add some Windows Update website addresses to your firewall's exceptions or "allow" list.

Please refer the below link for the troubleshooting steps:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/dca75593-6b39-4563-ba62-35de98ea98ea1033.mspx

Apart from this, you can also try downloading the stand alone package for Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Please follow the below link:

Thank you.

installation of office home and student 2007

Question:This is seemingly an installation issue, I think.  I brought 2007 Home and Student Office about one month ago.  I'm just now installing in time for school.  No install wizard kicked in, just autoplay.  After selecting installation, I got amessage that OneNote.en-us ****.msi and that I must choose a valid installation source.  After repeated attempts of the same thing, I decided to select customize and delete OneNote program from my installationl.  This only created a new message with the same thing.  "setup cannot find Office.en-us\officeLR.cab.  Is there no end.  Then I tried activation of my product key, which the official site denied saying that my store bought version product key was not valid.  Then we I searched the online help topics my problem is not listed and the telephone and internet help lines need a credit card and charge $49.  That is a rip off.  I welcome all good suggestions.  My computer running vista.

Ah ha.  Routing me to the discussion groups seemed daunting at first.  No one had the same problem but some were nearly similiar.  One solution was to turn off Norton, which I did and tada, my installation problems disappeared.  Now why couldn't have someone said that.  So I'm saying that.  Thank you.

error could not access network location %appdata%

Question:This is only one of the problems I am having while trying to unistall a program, it is also telling me I am not the adminstrator, I am the only one setup as administrator on the system. Why is this happening?

Answer 1: wrighttone77, for more enhanced security and safetyl, Vista by default does not enable the Administrator account, however your profile is part of the Administrator Group, which gives you much of the same privilages except for a few critical permissions. try running the uninstaller as an administrator. to do this Right-Click on the program uninstaller, and click Run As Administrator.

Also where is this program installed? it seems that it is linked to either a mapped drive or a network address? if that is the case then you are probably not part of the administrator group on the home link where the program has been installed, if so you will need to uninstall it from that PC, or you will need to apply permissions to that folder or drive for you to be able to edit it (ie uninstall).

See the following links for further assistance:

Problems with Windows Easy Transfer

Question:I have tried multiple times to use Easy Transfer for files from my old HP XP to my new HP Vista computer.  First time I did "all user files" and it stopped transferring midway and said that my D: drive was full on the new Vista.  So I did a recovery boot to factory settings, and tried again.

Second time I tried to transfer, I unchecked the D: drive and tried to keep it shorter, not so many files.  It transfered what I asked it to, but made those files under a separate user.  And again, blinking at me my D: drive is critically low on space.

I did another system recovery, but it didn't work.  The D: drive is still full.  I am doing another system recovery currently to see.  I negligently did not set a restore point before I started.  The tech support woman from India was no help at all.

What am I doing wrong?  Why won't Easy Transfer work "easily"?  I have so many games, movies and music on my XP that I can't copy out on disc since I don't have a working burner.  I'm not so concerned about transferring settings as much as the music, although I hate to have to lose all my favorites under outlook express and web pages.

Thanks for any help.

Answer 1:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928634

Above is the help link for how-to-use Windows Easy Transfer.

Some info on what your D: drive normally is.

Look in Computer, and if D: is between 5GB-9.9GBs, it is the Recovery Partition.

Transfer your Data to C:.

Your D: Drive normally is the Recovery Partition, that the Manufacturer put there, for your computer to put it back to factory settings in case of System Crash.

It is not for you to save anything to; and it is not to compress and/or Index, or have System Restore turned on for it!!!!.

Whatever you have installed or saved to D:, DELETE it very carefully, stop indexing, uncompress, and leave it alone.

You are supposed to have made Recovery disks from D:, in case of Hard Drive failure.

Ask the Manufacturer how to make them.

Cheers.
Mick Murphy - Microsoft Partner

Answer 2:I have no idea how to transfer the data to the C: drive.  Easy transfer doesn't let you choose where the information is going.  I know I don't want anything going to the D: drive, but I don't know how to stop it from happening.  I would have no idea how to delete files from the D: drive even.  I have recovery disks now and have got the computer back to manufacturer's settings.

Is there a better method than Easy Transfer?  Am I the only one who is having this issue?

TIA

Answer 3:You can burn your Data to CD/DVD, or use a Flash Dive to transfer Data.

Below is MS's info on how to use it:

Windows Easy Transfer

Buy an Easy Transfer Cable

Buy an Easy Transfer Cable

You can purchase an Easy Transfer Cable from many computer manufacturers or retailers. To ensure the cable is designed for Windows Easy Transfer, be sure to look for a "Certified for Windows Vista" or "Works with Windows Vista" logo on the packaging.

Buy an Easy Transfer CableBuy an Easy Transfer Cable now at Windows Marketplace

Windows Easy Transfer helps you easily move the files and settings stored on your PC running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or even Windows Vista to a new PC running Windows Vista. Windows Easy Transfer will automatically transfer things like:

  • User accounts

  • Files and folders

  • E-mail messages, settings, and contacts

  • Photos, music, and videos

  • Windows settings

  • Program data files and settings

  • Internet settings

There are several ways that you can use Windows Easy Transfer; choose the way you prefer to connect your two PCs, choose the data you want to transfer, and then let Windows Easy Transfer do the work for you.

Easy Transfer Cable

An Easy Transfer Cable is a special USB cable that is designed to work with Windows Easy Transfer by creating a direct link between your old PC and your new PC. Using one of these cables is the easiest and fastest method for transfer and is recommended if you don't have access to a network. An Easy Transfer Cable will transfer data from PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista to a PC running Windows Vista.

Here's how it's done…it's as easy as 1-2-3
  • Install the small software application that was included with your cable (or download the software here) on your current PC.

  • Plug the cable into both computers.

  • Windows Easy Transfer will launch and guide you through the transfer process. Your information and files will transfer at approximately 20 GB per hour.

Using a home or small business network

If you already have a wired or wireless network, this is a great way to transfer all of your data. You can use your network to transfer your data in real time across your network or by using a shared folder on the network.

Using an external hard drive

If you own an external hard drive, Windows Easy Transfer can copy your data to that drive and then copy data from the drive to your new computer.

Using CD or DVD

Windows Easy Transfer can use your PC's CD or DVD burner to transfer your data. This solution is not ideal but may work well if you're moving only a small amount of data that can fit onto one disc. If you have a larger amount of data that won't fit onto one disk, it's possible to use this method of transfer by using multiple discs.

To learn more about the details of the Windows Easy Transfer process, read more in Windows Vista Help.

Running Vista Home Premium from a Vista Ultimate install disk?

Question:

I recently had a small electrical fire in my office that destroyed my copy of Vista Home Premium along with my PC. I have just gotten the components to build my new system when I realized that I only have access to the install disk for Vista Ultimate. I have the product key for home premium and was wondering if I use the Ultimate disk and leave the Product Key blank during the intallation will I be able to enter the product key for my home premium for the activation. Or can I just enter the Home Premium product key during the installation? I have no desire to upgrade to the ultimate version, I'm just trying to find a way to get my system up and running without buying a new copy of home premium.

Answer 1:You can not change Products Keys to make it a different version afterwards.
The wrong version is already installed!

If it is a proper Microsoft Vista DVD, read this:

A proper Vista DVD contains all Vista versions.
The Product Key determines which Vista version gets installed.
You enter it during installation.

There are 2 Vista disks: one for 32bit Operating System, and one for 64bit Operating System.

Answer 2:Thanks Mick,
I did a system restore and things seem to be better now, but how do I make sure to stop and reverse the 2007 Vista editions that seem to still be on my computer? For example, I can't access Microsoft Publisher anymore at all and in my programs list it shows it as Publisher 2007. How can I get my old Publisher back? That seems to be the only program that is like that and the rest are the same.
Any advise is much appreciated. thanks.

Answer 3:This is a Vista forum, not an Office  Newsgroup.
They are the Office experts at the links I gave you

You can do a Manual uninstall of the office 2007 Programs.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928218

"How to manually uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using the "Add or Remove Programs" feature"

You may then have to Uninstall/reinstall your earlier Office version, if you have problems.

SQL Server Reporting Services on Vista HP

Question:The last time I checked, SQL Server Reporting Services could not be installed on Vista Home Premium due to issues with IIS.  Has this ever been fixed or must I upgrade to Vista Ultimate?  I am using SQL Server Developer 2005.  If the answer has been covered in these forums, I have been unable to find it, but I have found a lot of other folks with the same problem.

Answer 1:Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Vista Answers Forum!

Yes, you are right.

SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services cannot be installed on home versions.

Prerequisites:

You have a computer that is running one of the following editions of Windows Vista:

  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Enterprise
  • Windows Vista Ultimate

For more information on how to install SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services on a Windows Vista-based computer, refer the below link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/934164

This article discusses requirements and steps for installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services on a Windows Vista-based computer.

Hope this information is useful.

Regards,

Savan – Microsoft Support.

Answer 2:That is understood.  What I do not understand is why your "Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005" (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(SQL.90).aspx) says something different.  If specifically shows SQL Server 2005 Developer to be compatible with Vista HP.  What developer would want to install a system with no reporting capability?  And how can I be sure that upgrading to Vista Ultimate will solve the problem after the fact?  You really need to get your information updated!
