[Answer]Media Player 11 CD ripping problems in Vista x64

Question:Dear Microsoft,

I'm having a strange problem with Media Player 11 in Vista Ultimate x64.  I tried to rip a new CD I got and all of the tracks were ripped just fine except the last 2.  Media Player started ripping the 2nd to last track but then paused at 10% for about 10-15 seconds, then continued with the rip.  The same thing happened with the last track.

After listening to all of the songs, those last two tracks had brief distortions in them.  So I tried ripping them again but without any luck.  The same scenario would repeat with each attempt.  So I took an older CD and tried to rip a song from it but with the same problem of Media Player 11 pausing at 10% momentarily, and then continuing with the rip (but with brief distortions in the song during playback).  The distortions are always in roughly the same spot.

I took my CD to a different computer that has Vista Home Premium x32 and did not have any problems ripping the songs and there were no distortions afterwards.

I briefly looked around some internet message boards and several other people have the same issue with seemingly no resolution.

Why is this happening?  Enabling error-correction in Media Player 11 fixes the distortion problem but it takes 5 times as long to rip a CD.

Additional info: I have an Asus 48x32x48 SATA DVD combo drive that has the latest firmware.  I also have the latest motherboard/SATA controller drivers installed.

Answer 2: If you use ReadyBoot, I would try it without that. The speed of ripping is controled by available resources. the ReadyBoost may obstruct that.

Answer 3: Thank you for your super fast reply, but no I am not using ReadyBoost.

I actually thought that was the case of ripping being affected by available resources.  I completely shutdown my security suite and even disabled my internet/network connection and tried ripping my CD again, but the same situation persists.

I suppose I'll have to wait for service pack 2.  I had a slightly annoying problem of PowerPoint 2007 not copying over *all* of the formating from older PowerPoint slides.  It would keep font sizes and types but would left-align all text.  That issue wasn't ever resolved until the first Office 2007 service pack was released.  :(
