China is situated in the east and middle of Asia and on the west shore of the Pacific. It covers a land area of about 9.6 million square kilometers and a sea area of about 4.73 million square kilometers, with a mainland coastline of about 18 thousand kilometers. It has borders with 14 countries around it, a population of 1.3 billion and 56 ethnic groups. It contains 22 provinces, 4 municipalities, 5 autonomous regions, 2 special administrative areas. The capital is Beijing.

The extreme points of the Chinese borders are positioned: from the north point (north latitude 53°31’) starting from the central line of the main waterway of the Heilongjiang River to the north of Mohe, Heilongjiang Province, to the south point (north latitude 4°15’) at the Zengmu Shoal of the Nansha Islands in the South China Sea; from the west point (east longitude 73°) at Pamirs Plateau west of Wuqia County of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to the east point (east longitude 135°) at the main waterway juncture of Heilongjiang River and Ussuri River within the boundaries of Fuyuang country, Heilongjiang Province.

China’s land territories encompasses the mainland of the People’s Republic of China and its coastal islands, Taiwan including Diaoyu Island, and its various affiliated islands, Pescadores Islands, Dongsha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands, and Nansha Islands and all other islands that belong to the People’s Republic of China. Its territorial waters extend 12 sea miles measured from the territorial sea baseline with an adjoining area of 24 sea miles in width.

中国边界顶端位置为：北起黑龙江省漠河以北的黑龙江主航道的中心线（北纬53°31′），南到南海南沙群岛的曾母暗沙（北纬4°15′）；西起新疆维吾尔自治区乌恰县以西的帕米尔高原（东经73°附近），东至黑龙江省抚远县境内黑龙江与乌苏里江主航道汇合处（东经135°多）。

中国陆地领土包括中华人民共和国大陆及其沿海岛屿、台湾及其包括钓鱼岛在内的附属各岛、澎湖列岛、东沙群岛、西沙群岛、中沙群岛、南沙群岛以及其他一切属于中华人民共和国的岛屿。领海的宽度从领海基线量起为12海里。中国的毗连区宽度为24海里。
