[Answer]Volume Control turns itself higher

Question:I am new to Vista.  Here is the problem:  Suddenly a blue window with a speaker and volume meter appears and the volume of the computer maxes out.  If I open volume control and move the slider to a lower level of volume, the volume goes back to the max.  Eventually the window disappears, but do not know where this is coming from or how to eliminate this.  Nothing happens if I left-click or right click the blue window.  I am not using a mouse, I am using the touchpad.  Is this being caused by contacting the touchpad?  Is this a virus?  I cannot find any controls for this and never saw anything like this in XP.  It is incredibly annoying, but I also understand it may be due to something I am inadvertently doing or due to a setting that may need to be changed.

Hi jblaneman,

Thanks for using answers.microsoft.com forums.

From the information provided, it sounds as though a hardware driver audio control is popping up at that time.  Let me ask you, when the blue screen occurs are you able to press the CTRL ALT DEL keys and look in task manager to see what processes and programs are running?

If you are able to do that, check what the program the pop up is coming from and notate that in this post.

Also, verify in Device Manager what the sound card is that is in the system.

Click Start ORB / Control Panel - Classic View / Device Manager - under the Sounds , video and game controllers what is listed as installed?  If you double click on that device is it listed as working properly?

Please let us know further details so we may further pursue a resolve for this issue.

Thank you,

Answer 3:Debbie-

I was working in Internet Explorer and it was the only program I had running at the time.  Up popped the blue window, I opened Task Manager and the only program listed as running was Explorer.  I went into Control Panel as you instructed and there were five devices listed.  All indicated they were working properly.

My volume was turned up to the limit and then the blue window disappeared, it did not return during the rest of this particular Windows session.
