[Answer]Receiving error when trying to share files between WinXP and Vista

Question:When I'm on my laptop running Vista, I'm trying to access files on my WinXP machine. I have file sharing set up and until a few days ago, it worked fine. The only change I have made is instaling SP2 on my Vista laptop. My laptop is able to see the shared folders on my XP maching with no problem but I recieve the below error when trying to open file within the shared folders.

Curiously, I get a similar error when I expand the "entire network" on my XP machine and click on anything within the shared folders on my XP machine. This makes me suspect the issue lies with my XP machine, rather the the connection between my PC and laptop.

The error reads as follows...

"\\LOUNGE\shared Files is not accessable. You might not have the permission to use the network resourse. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

The last line about the storage confuses me as there is plenty of HDD space on both machines and there are only a few small files in the share folders, less than 20MB.

Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

Answer 2:Hi wbosher,
I think you are correct and the problem is with XP.

Answer 3:Not enough server storage available error (from MVP Ron Lowe)

This error indicates that you are falling foul of the IRPStackSize bug. The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to, not the machine where you see the error message. On the computer you are attempting to connect to, check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Usual fix : You need to fix a parameter called IRPStackSize

On the computer you are attempting to connect to, Set the IRPStackSize back to the default (15 ). Perform the following steps:

  1. Start regedit.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
  3. Double-click IRPStackSize (or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it with type DWORD and ensure the case is correct).
  4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
  5. Reboot the computer.

Norton AV is usual suspect for breaking it. There's a KB article about this, too:
