[Answer]Sound stops working after putting computer into hibernate mode

Question:Hello,

Running Vista 64-bit SP1 Home Edition.  I believe it's onboard sound (Realtek High Definition Audio shows in device manager), but uses Creative X-Fi software (without a Creative soundcard installed).  It's a Gateway computer.  My problem is that when I put the computer into hibernate mode and wake it, any program that had sound before hibernate and which I left open, lost the sound on waking.  I would have to close the program then reopen it to hear anything again.  So far this has happened with 2 internet radio players and Windows Media Player.

I was given a sound driver update to instal by tech support (Audio_Realtek_5.10.0.5704_Vistax64 is the filename).  But right clicking the device manager already shows driver version 6.0.1.5704, so I don't know if this is indeed a updated driver or an older version.  The update I was given at the same time for my videocard was the exact same driver as already installed, so I didn't instal it.

I don't know if this is a driver problem, or just a setting somewhere that can be adjusted.  I tried at one point to update the sound driver (not entirely sure how to do it) with the new file, but received the message that the current driver was already the best and up to date.

Any ideas on a solution to the problem would be most appreciated...

Thanks!

Answer 2:

Hi Stonerose,

Thank you for using the forums.

Quick question, does this happen when you're playing a CD and not streaming music off the internet? How about your windows sound, are they still there when you wake up your computer?

What's happen here is that when your computer goes to hibernate, you're basically shutting it down, hence you have to restart you applications again after you wake it up. I think you're drivers you currently have are fine so I wouldn't recommend installing the driver you were provided.

Hope that helps.

Answer 3:Hi John,

Thanks for your response.  The same thing happens with Windows Media Player when playing a CD or MP3s from my hard drive, not just when I am streaming music off the internet from a web browser.  It happens when the programs are left open (with the music paused or stopped), the system put into hibernate, then woken up.  When I click on play, no sound is heard.  I will only hear sound if I close the program or browser, and reopen it and start again.

I went into the sound menu and tested different windows sounds.  Immediately after waking the computer, Windows sounds can't be heard either.  However, after closing the program I was using (say WMP), and testing windows sounds again, I can then hear the sounds again.  So it seems as though all sound is off until I close whatever program was open, and restart it.

I did not have this problem on my previous computer with Windows XP (I could just press play on my music player after waking & away I went) so I am wondering if it's just a setting somewhere or some kind of conflict?

Thanks again...
