On September 27, 1949, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference adopted the Resolution on the Capital, Calendar, National Anthem and National Flag of the People's Republic of China, designating the March of the Volunteers, lyrics by Tian Han and music by Nie Er, as the provisional anthem of the People’s Republic of China. During the cultural revolution, the lyrics of the anthem was forbidden to be sung, as Tian Han, the lyrics writer, was falsely accused for defecting to the enemies, though the music of March of the Volunteers was allowed to play on diplomatic occasions. On April 12, 1982, the 5th Plenary Session of the 5th National People's Congress approved that the March of the Volunteers with its lyrics written by Tian Han and music by Nie Er be adopted as the official national anthem of the People’s Republic of China.
The March of the Volunteers exemplifies the combating spirits of the dauntless and tenacious Chinese nation and is extolled as the clarion call for the liberation of the Chinese Nation. By singing the national anthem together, people of various ethnic groups of the nation can awaken their strong internal emotions, enhance the cohesion power and proudness of the state and the nation, continuously inspire the spirit of loving the motherland and the people, marching forward dauntlessly and striving for self-excellence unremittingly, in order to fight with all efforts for the peaceful rise of the Chinese Nation.
