Windows wants to install updates for Office 2002 and Office XP and I have VISTA and Office 2007

Question:I have read numerous threads and I don't seem to find the same problem I have.  I have been using Windows VISTA Home Premium (32 bit) for quite some time and since June 30, 2009 I have had difficulty downloading and installing Windows Updates.  I did install some updates today, but I continue to be asked to run/install updates for Office XP and Office 2002 (currently about 9).  I have been using VISTA and Office 2007 for some time.  I believe I have IE 7 and SP2.  I appreciate any help I can get to resolve this.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi katydid2,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Windows Vista answers forum.

There might be few files or registry entries of Office XP and Office 2002 on the computer, hence the updates are available for Office XP and Office 2002. You will have to remove all the versions of Microsoft Office installed on the computer and then re-install Microsoft Office 2007 on the computer.

To uninstall all the versions of Microsoft Office completely from the computer download and run the "Windows Installer CleanUp" Utility".

Link to download "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility":

For reference you may visit the following KB Article link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

After uninstalling all versions of Microsoft Office from the computer, restart the computer and then re-install Microsoft Office 2007 and restart once again. Now check the Windows Updates websites and you should not be offered the Office XP and Office 2002 updates again.

Please let us know if it helps.

Thanks and Regards,
Santosh

Answer 2:Hello Santosh,

I have just accessed your response and thank you.  Before uninstalling all versions of Microsoft Office, I want to verify that after doing that, and then reinstalling Office 2007, that I will not lose any information, i.e., contacts, etc.  I will presume any saved documents, etc. will not be effected.  Sorry to bother you with an additional question, but my "yellow streak" up my back just got bigger.  :-)

Thanks again for your assistance--it's greatly appreciated.

Hi katydid2,

Thank you for replying us back.

The saved documents will not be affected, but the Outlook contacts will be lost. However you can always take a backup by following the steps as in the following KB Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070

I will suggest you to visit the following Microsoft Office Discussion groups to have a better idea on how to backup the Outlook contents.

Please let us know if it helps.

Thanks and Regards,
