Vista x64 hangs at updates after fresh install

Question:Hey all

noticed my antivirus wasn't working yesterday, tried to fix, uninstalled, reinstalled, same problem, done a system restore, same problem.  Wasn't to bothered, i've been meaning to reinstall vista for some time, now seemed like the perfect time.

Booted from vista home premium disc, formatted the entire HDD rather than just the partition, windows appeared to install without issue, but as soon as it connected to windows updates, it downloaded and began to install them.  That was at 11am GMT, and i'm still waiting for the updates to be configuered!!

As i type this, the pc has just rebooted, i've just tried it, and it's wierd, there is a perceptible delay (1 second)  in movement of the mouse, and i've just shut it down and now it's sitting there like a lemon!

I've reinstalled vista probably 10 times and never had an issue before, in fact i was beginning to prefer vista over xp!

Help please folks!

Intel Quadcore
Vista home premium x64 (genuine)
4gb Ram
blah blah blah........

Answer 1:

Hi Liquid Stool,

Firstly you can check if the same issue occurs in Safe Mode.

To boot into Safe Mode, restart the computer and tap the F8 key on your keyboard for about four to five times. You will see Safe Mode listed in the Windows Advanced options. Select Safe Mode using your arrow keys and then press enter.

Please check if you find any errors in the event viewer. To open the event viewer, click on start and in the start search bar type event viewer and then press enter. Check under the windows logs and the application logs if you can see any errors and let us know.

You can also try connecting a different mouse and check if the same issue re-occurs.

Please try to update the graphic card drivers at the graphic card manufacturers web site.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please let us know if you require further help.

Answer 2:hi, thanks for your reply, tried those suggestions and still had no luck.  Slept on the issue and had an epiphany - i wasn't loading my ASUS drivers, something that i ALWAYS do before allowing vista to update, anyway don't know if why i'd forgotten to do them but as soon as i loaded it, the issue diasappeared - job done!

Thanks anyway for your help dude.
