Question:I run Vista Home Prem 64-bit on my home build PC. The main Hard Drive is almost full and showing signs of errors. I only run the OS and Applications from the HD. I have bought a replacement HD (WD2500AAJS) and wish to mirror copy the old drive to the new and then just swap the two out. Experience tells me that this is not so simple and the HD may not work correctly or at all if I do this. Is this the case and how do I go about making such a copy.
Answer 1:No, it's not difficult as long as the original hard drive is still viable. If you bought the new Western Digital retail it will have come with software to clone the old drive to the new one. If you bought whitebox, go to Western Digital's website and download the utility.
Put the new hard drive in as slave (or in second place if SATA). Boot with the cloning utility and clone the old drive to the new one. When the cloning process is complete, shut down the computer. Remove the old hard drive and put the new one in its place. If still using ATA, make sure you jumper it as Master. Boot to Windows.

Answer 2:Thank you for that. I'll have a bash.
Last time I went to WD's website all the tools and apps were not Vista compliant. I guess they've upgraded
Answer 3:I'm sure you can clone a drive that has a Vista operating system. The cloning software itself runs outside of Windows (you boot with it) and is usually a Linux variation (Acronis) or a flavor of DOS (Ghost) but not ever Windows.
