Question:I recently re-installed updates for windows vista...Service Pack 2. After doing so my computer will NOT shut down. It had happened earlier in the day and I had to do a system restore to get to a point in time where I could shut down my laptop. After doing that Window Vista automatically re-installed Service Pack 2 and the system failed to shut down again.
What do I do?
Answer 1:Read below on how to change Auto updates to Check with you.......
System Restore info is there as well.
Remove Vista Updates; two ways to do this:
1. Do a System Restore to before the Updates:
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > Put it back in time/pick your own date > Next
If using Norton, disable it before using System restore.
If unable to get into Normal Mode, do a System Restore in Safe Mode:
Tap F8 at Startup/power on, and from list of Startup options, select Safe mode by using the UP Arrow Key> then hit ENTER.
Do the System restore steps as per info above.
Also:
2. Click Start > Right-click Computer > Properties > Windows Updates down the bottom left corner > Installed Updates in bottom left corner in next window
> then click which one you do not want > Uninstall will appear at the top > Uninstall it.
Also, on the page where you clicked on "Installed Updates" Click on Change Settings up the top left corner there
> Change Update Settings in next page from Auto Update to "Check for updates but let me choose etc"> OK
When you look in the list of waiting updates, you can either download/install them one at a time, to find out the bad one.
> or if you do not need a particular one> Right-click on it> UAC Prompt > Hide It
Post back with the Update KB Number you are having trouble with.

Answer 2:
Hi PrudentialDan,
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers Vista Forum
We shall start with checking if some third party applications are conflicting with the shutdown.
Please follow these steps:
1. Please start the computer in "safe mode" and check if you are able to shut down the computer.
2. If shutdown is working properly in "safe mode", it means that there might be some third party application causing the issue.
3. Please follow the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 to perform a clean boot to determine which background programs are interfering with the shutdown.
4. If we are still facing the issue after the first three steps, you may try installing the latest display drivers from your manufacturer's website.
Let us know if it helps.
Thanks and Regards,Gulrez

Answer 3:Just wanted to let you know that I had this particular problem and yes it helped! A background program that started up was causing my laptop from shutting down properly. Thanks.
