Question:Today I downloaded and installed some "important" patches for Vista Ultimate. After the install, I rebooted and found myself in an endless loop of, "Configuring Updates - 3 of 3 - 0% Please do not turn off computer". I watched my PC re-boot and go through this loop no less then 10 times. This is the first time I have encountered this problem and I am wondering how I keep it from happening again. After running the Restore utility from my Vista disk, I was able to regain access to my PC as I could not even boot into safe-mode. Is there a utility/tool that is available to keep this from happening again????
Answer 1:
Hello Katinica,
You can change the setting in Windows update. Click on Start > Control Panel then select Security > Windows Update. Then Click on Change settings (left side). Here you can change to the option you prefer. I would NOT recommend selecting "Never check for updates".

Thanks. I have already taken that precaution. Do you know if there will be a fix for this issue in the future or is there something that I am missing. I like to keep my machine up-to-date with security patches, but at this point, I am very hesitatnt to update anything as I cannot afford to have my PC "go-down". Is there a patch/tool/utility that I am missing? I have read on other posts that this was a problem with SP1 for Vista. This is the first time I have run across this probelm and I have been on Vista for 18mos. Is this a problem that a format/reinstall will fix?
