Answer 1:
Hi aaaaaarrrgh,
It is very unfortunate to know that the installation of Vista service pack 2 has failed. Try the following steps to resolve the issue.
Steps to boot to the desktop
1. Boot from Vista DVD
2. Click on Repair your computer on the Installation screen.
3. Select System restore from the system recovery options.
4. Complete system restore by selecting a restore point and boot to the desktop.
Steps to troubleshoot Windows Vista service pack installation issues, Ref: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/947366
Method 1: Running the System File Checker.
- Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
· Run sfc /scannow -> This command checks for missing or corrupted system files. If it runs clean, with no errors, we learn nothing. If it finds missing or corrupted files, it will try to replace them with good copies and maybe fix your problem.
Method 2: Run the System Update Readiness Tool
The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
Download the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) package now. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0435684b-8d12-4028-9cb0-b2903257f1fd
Download the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista x64 (KB947821) package now. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b950e3b1-3267-41c2-8f10-1fe9a4bfa44d
Method 3: Install the stand-alone package for the service pack instead of using Windows Update to install the Service Pack

Hope this information was useful.

Answer 2:I have exactly the same problem after I tried to install sp2 from windows update. I can't start the computer in safe mode either. And when I boot from vista DVD it doesn't find my previous vista installation but asks for drivers for my hard drive, which is wierd because I can browse it for drivers... Any ideas what to do?
Michael
