Question:Hi I've been trying for some time to install windows Vista service pack 1, but it keeps coming with a failure message, don't remember it now, but if it is important I'll get it for you.
What happens is it installs for about 10 minutes I think and then it says the update has failed.
All other possible updates from windows update are installed, the SP 1 is the only one not installed yet.
Here's a link to my dxdiag(I haven't got a way to actually uploade it yet, so I can't get it too you before then), it might help.
ps could someone tell me if the graphic card "steals memory from the 2 gb's of RAM?

Hi Anfinn ,
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers Forums.
Let's first have you run the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) which detects incorrect manifests, files, or registry data, it might replace the incorrect data with a corrected version. Refer the link given below:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2889489c-ee87-4607-8aa5-812e8078ab27&DisplayLang=en&displaylang=en
For information about this tool refer the following Microsoft KB article KB 947821:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947821
After that try and install SP1. If it's still unsuccessful, you might have to disable any firewall/antivirus programs.
What firewall and/or antivirus programs do you have?
If you decide to disable these, close all programs, restart your computer, then disable all antivirus/firewall programs.
Try to install SP1. If still unsuccessful, reply back with what antivirus/firewall programs you have.
You may even need to uninstall a firewall or antivirus program for SP1 to get through even after disabling them. Only do that if you know that you can reinstall them afterwards.
Another thing we can try is to get this update while in Safe Mode. (Before booting into Safe Mode) Save the SP1 installation to the desktop, then boot into Safe Mode by following the below steps:
1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
2. Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart.
3. Do one of the following:
· If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
· If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.
4. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode, press Enter
5. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
From there try and install SP1. If still unsuccessful, then I would suggest that you refer to the following link for free Windows Vista SP1 support:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=500921
If still there is no luck, please provide us the exact error message you get while installing SP1.
At times graphic card shares the RAM memory.
Shared memory is based on the graphic card and your motherboard. You can change it, but it is automatically adjusted to what should be optimal for performance.
Please let us know if the above steps help you, Good luck.
Regards,
Manasa P- Microsoft Support.
Answer 2:thanks for your reply, I'll try it as soon as I got time. Once again thanks for the support
Answer 3:I tried that readiness tool but it didn't work. Tried to run it and then I tried to install the update again. Also tried to disable the firewall. Windows firewall was already disabled but I have Mcafee antivirus and that one was on, now should I try that to start the computer in security mode thing or something else?
