2007 Office Suite SP2 Failed and continually requests restart.

Question:

Windows Update pulled Office 2007 SP2 down to my computer on Thursday night and rebooted my system.  On Friday, I got a message stating that the computer needed to restart to complete changes.  I rebooted, but the message comes back.  I checked and saw that the SP2 upgrade failed along with the KB955430.  I manually downloaded the SP2 upgrade and rebooted the system.  The message continues to appear.  I manually downloaded KB955430.  No change.  On the Review Update History page, the KB955430 is showing successful on 5-16.  On the Installed Updates page, KB955430 and 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) are both included, dated 5-16, but I keep getting the restart request.  Windows Update reboots my computer every night at 3am, so I have temporarily shut if off.  How can I satisfy this restart request?  The error code that displays for the SP2 install that failed is 57F.  The error code for the KB955430 that failed is 80200011.  I am running a Dell Vostros Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4500.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello jeeptrax,

Thank you for using Microsoft Answers fourm.  Here are some suggestions that another Support Engineer suggested.

do the following:

STEP 1
------------
Download and install the latest version of Windows Installer
To install the latest Windows Installer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5a58b56f-60b6-4412-95b9-54d056d6f9f4&DisplayLang=en

Step 2
------------
CleanUp utility Download and then install the Microsoft Windows CleanUp utility. To do this, visit the Microsoft Web site: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

Then run updates again, good luck!

Thanks Martin.

Answer 2:I tried the suggestions that were listed, but I still have the same issue, plus, KB942288 is now showing in Windows Update as both Pending and Installed.   It shows Pending on the "Review your update history" page, but is included on the "Installed Updates" page.  I am making the assumption that if it appears on the Installed Updates page that it is successful, but I do not know this.  Also, when I run Windows Update, it does not appear to actually do an update (I have run it several times, but the most recent check for updates is listed as yesterday), but only displays the "Restart your computer to install important updates" frame with the Restart Now button.  Is there something else I can try?  Thanks for your assistance!
