Question:I got this error msg when it did not install 3 updates:
"Code 80070005 Windows Update encounterd an unknown error."
I've tried to install 2x, both times got this msg.
I agreed to license terms, there's plenty of disk space. So what do I do to install the ##$@@% updates already?
The updates it won't accept are:
1. Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB968389)
Download size: 3.1 MB
Update type: Important
2. Realtek - Network - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Download size: 152 KB
Update type: Optional
DriverUpdate: Realtek Network software update released in May, 2009
3. The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Download size: 212.6 MB
Update type: Important
There were also some optional updates (Office Live add-in 1.4 and Windows Live Essentials) but since they are optional and I guess I'm turned off by all this "Live" stuff, I didn't try to update those. : o )

Hi Angela_g,
First, run the system readiness tool from the link for Windows Vista 64 bit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b950e3b1-3267-41c2-8f10-1fe9a4bfa44d
Microsoft released the System Update Readiness Tool to resolve certain conditions that could cause installing updates and other software not to work.
For more information check the link "Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate, and for Windows 7 Release Candidate" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
If this fails, then check if the updates are installed on the computer. If it is then uninstall those updates
i) Download the stand alone Update for Windows Vista for 64 bit system(KB 968389) from the link http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=f877a3bf-0240-4bf8-94fc-10bf3f3c91e8
ii) Restart the computer in the Safe Mode (by pressing the F8 key while the computer is restarting).
iii) Install the updates in the Safe Mode.
iv) Restart the computer normally.
After it is done install the updates one by one.
All the best!

Answer 2:Thanks. That seems to have worked in that I installed 3 or 4 updates fine, then SP Windows SP2 was presented as an update. I tried to install that but got this msg (Too bad I can't copy and paste these system messages. Instead have to retype):
"Install Windows Service Pack
One or more drivers might be incompatible
The driver below might be incompatible. Check to see if a solution is available . .
MSDSM - Please read Microsoft Knowlede Base article: 967752
Check for solution"
When I click on "Check for solution" no solution is available.
Note that even though it refers to "The driver listed below", no driver is listed, just the KB article which talks about a Windows Server (it's a home PC. Yes it's networked wirelessly to my laptop but I don't think of it as a server) The KB article talks about
"connected to a storage device over MPIO paths does not restart if the storage device is a boot device, or you lose access to the device if the device is a data volume"
My camera's flash card was connected to the PC when I was attempting to install the update but that flashcard has never been used as a boot device for the PC.I can either "Ignore and continue" or " cancel". If I choose "ignore" I'm told:
"Installing Windows Vista SP w might cause some drivers to stop working correctly. Are you sure you want to continue?
Since no driver is ever listed, should I continue?
Thanks.
Answer 3:
Hi Angela_g,
Welcome back.
To work around on this issue uninstall update KB972036 and try installing SP2 again.
To uninstall the Kb 972036
1. Click start and Type in Programs and Features in the search bar. Then Open Programs and Features
2. Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB972036), and then click Uninstall/Change.
It may also be possible to ignore the error and continue with SP2 setup.
You can also install the Application compatibility update (KB972036) after installing SP2.
For more information check the KB article "August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update": - http://support.microsoft.com/KB/972036
Let me know if this worked.
All the best!
