Problems after Windows update

Question: Hello,

I have recently bought a laptop with Windows Vista, Family Premium SP1.

2 weeks ago, Microsoft Update downloaded several updates. Since, several windows of Vista ("System", "Windows Update", "Personalize") displays fleetingly (I even have no time to see the contents: they immediately close after having been opened). Other problems appeared: in explorer the details of files / folders do not appear, the sizes of files are in byte (not in MB) in the properties...

I made a system recovering which resolved the problem but I had previously put the updates in automatic installation from the Center of Security. Thus same thing again, however I have no more access to the updates configuration and I ran CCleaner which erased system restorations.

Sorry for my English, I'm French.

Please, could you help me ?

Answer 1:

Hi RollFroy,

Thank you for posting your inquiry to the Microsoft Answers Site.

Below are a few steps to troubleshoot the issue of Windows Explorer closing when trying to access System files.

Please try a clean boot to determine whether background programs are interfering:

For reference, the link below includes the steps to perform a clean boot:

 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Please relay the status after the clean boot.

If the issue still persists, please relay the error message if any when trying to access the system files.

Also, to better assist, are the file properties not displaying correctly for all files or only select files?

Thank you,

Mary

Answer 2:   Hi Mary,

Thank you for your answer.
I apply a clean boot but, with the simplest boot, the problem is still there, without error message.
I have a French version of Vista but I didn't install any language pack.
The file properties are not displaying correctly for all files (and folders) in the explorer with the details view and, in the properties form obtained by right-clicking, the size is in bytes.

Thank you,

RollFroy

Answer 3: Hello RollFroy,

I would suggest changing your view in Windows Explorer to classic view, apply the settings and then changing it back.
Then see if you are still experiencing an issue with the file properties not displaying correctly.

To do so, select the Use Windows classic folder option in the Folder Options window and Apply.
In Windows Explorer, go to Organize, click on the drop down arrow and click on Folder and Search Options.
Under Tasks, select the Use Windows Classic folders and click on Apply. This technique will return to the Classic menu.
Close Windows Explorer, then reopen and check to see if the file properties are displaying correctly.

If you choose to go back to the default view of Vista, then unselect the Use Windows Classic folders and click on Apply.
Under the View tab, be sure and check Display File Icon on thumbnails
Display file size information in folder tips
Display simple folder view in Navigation Pane.

Please report back and let us know if this has helped.

Sincerley,

Marilyn
