Question:Hello. I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5893 and bought it with Windows Vista (either Home Premium or Ultimate) 64bit version. Last year, I installed Windows 7 RC and failed to make a backup of my files before it expired. Now, it shuts off every 2 hours like it had warned prior to its expiration. Unfortunetly, I am now attempting to backup my hard drive and since the computer restarts every 2 hours the backup does not resume to the point where it had left off but starts the backup process all over again. This makes it impossible for me to backup my files as it takes longer then 2 hours to complete the backup process. I do not know what to do since I would like to switch back to Vista without losing all my work and other necessary files.
Is there a program besides Windows that may run faster to backup my data and files (preferably free but if not - thats ok too)? Or is there another way I may save my user files and program files and reinstall Windows Vista without sacraficing my work? If so please explain the steps. Also, after backing up the data, I would have to probably reinstall all my programs too, right? Or is there a way to ensure the programs remain after switching from Windows 7 back to Windows Vista?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am somewhat at a loss and would like to clean out my PC and ensure a secure/debugged version of windows. Thank you in advance.
Tina
Answer 1:You do not have Windows 7 RC; it shuts down every 2 hours from March, 2010.
Windows 7 Beta is what you have.
Why don't you just copy your Data files to Flash Drive, or burn them to CD/DVD.
That won't take 2 hours.
And if you do not get them all, go back for the rest later.
Your Program files are lost during a clean install.
That is why there is no point doing a full System backup.
You have to do a clean install to go back to Vista, and reinstall all your programs.
In a clean install, the Hard Drive is wiped clean.

Answer 2:Thank you very much for your quick response. I appreciate it and apologize for my misunderstanding - it is the Beta version.
I have a question regarding your advice on copying my files to flash drive/burning them to cd/dvd. In this case would I run the risk of the file properties not transferring in some cases (a problem sometimes with transfering media files)?
Would I be able to run Windows Easy Transfer from the Beta Version to a external drive and after reinstalling Vista transfer files back to the computer? Or would that be ineffective with the 2 hour shut downs also?
Thanks again. I appreciate your time.
