installing xp on computer running vista

Question:I have a new computer with Vista and would like to install XP as well so I can run my older programs. The new hard drive has two partitions, with the second having the recovery program. I assume that I should not install XP on that partition, so plan to run it from a 149 GB external hard drive. Is this possible and practical? How do I switch between the two?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer 1:Windows will not run from an External Hard Drive.

Resize/shrink  your 1st Partition where Vista is installed, etc as at above link.

First, go to your computer manufacturer's website and check to see if your model computer has XP Drivers available for it..

If XP Drivers are not available for your Model, forget the idea.

Virtual PC 2007

It is not supported in Home Premium, but does work in it.
