Answer 1:

Hi Allie,

Welcome to Microsoft Vista Answers Forum!

This error code "0x8007064C" comes up when windows update is unable to locate the downloaded update. To resolve this we need to rename the windows update temporary download folder.

To rename the Windows Update temporary download folder, follow the steps that are appropriate for your version of Windows.

1.    Click Start Collapse this imageExpand this image, type notepad in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

2.    Paste the following commands into the new Notepad document:

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv

3.    On the File menu, click Save As.

4.    In the Save in box, click Desktop.

5.    In the Save as type box, click All Files.

6.    In the File name box, type Rename.bat.

7.    Click Save.

8.    On the File menu, click Exit to exit Notepad.

9.    On your desktop, right-click Rename.bat and then click Run as Administrator.Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

10. Try to install the update by using the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site.

11. If the update is installed successfully, delete the Rename.bat file that you saved in steps 1 through 7.

If the above steps does not solve the problem, please download the update KB 963707 and install it manually on the computer.

Answer 3:

Hi Allie,

Let's try a few more things to get it working. First we shall try and update the Windows Update agent and also perform a clean boot and see what happens.

How to obtain the latest Windows Update Agent

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

For an x86-based computer
Download the windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe package now.

To perform clean boot, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Perform a clean boot

Note If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. We strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable.

  1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
  2. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility.

Collapse this imageExpand this imageIf you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
  4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
  5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Now try to download and install the update manually from KB 963707.

To configure the computer back to normal boot up follow step 2.

Step 2: Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

  1. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.Collapse this imageExpand this image

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  2. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
  3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

If the above steps do not fix the problem, please open and copy the last 20 lines of WindowsUpdate.log file from your computer.
