Activation unsuccessful with genuine key

Question:I have a genuine retail box of Vista Home Premium 32bit. A few months ago I bought and was sent a 64bit upgrade DVD from Microsoft. Last weekend I installed a new motherboard and upgraded my RAM, formatted my Harddrive and installed Vista from the 64bit DVD, using my original product key. I had to activate immediately via the automated phone service, which was successful.

Vista has been auto-updating for the last week and is now up to SP1. Over the last day or so I've started getting message boxes saying my copy of Windows is not genuine and asking my to re-activate, but when I try to re-activate it says the product key I typed is already in use - yes it's in use, I've already activated!! So why can I not vaildate windows, and why do I get "not genuine" messages?

What worries me is although I already activated and can't seem to activate again, the message in Control Panel > System is "You must Activate today. Activate Windows now"

Help!

Answer 1:Do I understand that you installed 64-bit Vista from the upgrade DVD but entered the product key from your original 32-bit DVD?  If so, go to Control Panel > Classic View > System, click "Change product key", and enter the product key from the 64-bit DVD.

If that doesn't solve the problem, call the activation phone service, talk with a live person, and explain the situation.

Answer 2:I wasn't given a key with the 64bit DVD. It came in a clear plastic sleeve saying Origin:Ireland - Should I have been sent a new key too?

So I assumed I would have to use the original key! I guess I'll just call up tomorrow

Answer 3:

Thanks again for this reply! I rung Microsoft and they sorted me out with a key very quickly - I can't believe I just assumed to use the same key as the 32bit version! Cheers!
