Changing default sound device and application recognition

Question:I'm new to Vista (home premium w/sp2) and I'm confused by how the (control_panel -> Sounds) default device assignment, specifically changing the device, works with existing (running) applications.

I frequently change between speakers and headset - however, the output device change is not recognized by currently running applications, such as iTunes or Firefox, and will not be recognized until I completely exit and restart the application.

Why?  This is hugely inconvenient and inconsistent from other well-behaved platforms such as Mac OS X.  I simply wish to change the default sound output device, on-the-fly, without being forced to restart apps.

Am I doing something wrong or does Vista not present this functionality to the end-user?

Thanks!

Answer 1:

Hello Wyntr,

.

At this time the feature of switching between audio output devices is done manually. To make the selection, you can click on the sound icon in the taskbar then click on the Mixer button at the bottom of the volume control. In the volume properties you can  click on Devices in the top left corner and select the appropriate device to make it the default for applications opened from that point forward.

Let us know if this helps or if you have additional questions regarding this issue.
