Question:Hi!
Thanks in advance for the help!
I have a new Dell XPS 430 running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
I am attempting to record and external audio source (old audio tapes) using Vista Sound Recording. I am inputing the audio using the "line in" jack on the back of the computer. The visual sound meter shows a signal is present, and I can record, save, and playback the audio file after it is recorded. The problem is that I can hear no sound while recording an external audio source. I check under "Sounds" in Control Panel, and the "line in" monitor shows it is receiving a signal (and the level is turned up), but nothing is heard real time. No speakers are muted. All other computer sounds, MP3 files, and CDs are heard without difficulty. When I do a speaker check under "Sounds", the speakers work fine. But I cannot hear any inputed audio until after I record the signal.
The computer is only 2 months old, and I have never been able to hear any inputed audio real time. This isn't something that just stopped working.
I also use Total Recorder 7.1 and I have the same problem. Total Recorder sees a signal from the external audio input and records it. But I can't hear what I recorded until I play back the recorded file. With Windows XP I could always hear an external audio input as soon as I connected the audio source, but thus far it doesn't work the same in Vista.
The device manager tells me that my sound card and driver are functioning normally.
Any ideas anyone? Is this a change in Vista compared with XP? Have they blocked real time monitoring because of some conflict or feedback problem? I'm just guessing.
Thanks!!!
Dan

Hello Dan1951,
Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Vista Community site.
Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.
Sorry to hear you are having a problem with this and I understand your frustration.
I'm not sure if this is what you have tried or will work for you but I suggest trying this:
Goto Control Panel , Select Sound, Under playback tab, click on Speakers, select levels check for Line in muted.
I would also goto the Total Recorder website and see what they have to offer on this subject.
Let us know if these steps resolve your problem. I hope the information is useful.
Regards,
Anthony
Answer 2:Anthony,
Thanks for the reply!
You suggested:
"
"Goto Control Panel , Select Sound, Under playback tab, click on Speakers, select levels check for Line in muted."
Already tried that, and it didn't work.
I have already emailed the Total Recorder software people, and they report no problems with their software and Vista. They could not explain my problem.
I might also mention that I have the same problem with Sound Recorder that comes with Windows.
I have bees to BestBuy where I bought the computer, and they have told me that Microsoft stopped the monitor feature because of feedback problems. However,I have never had feedback problems, and I am not sure what they suggested is true.
Any other ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Hello,
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) on a Dell XPS 420. I have a SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio card with the latest driver. The problem I have has been discussed frequently on the Web with no solution given that works for me.
The problem is discussed by Microsoft here:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/1e87a3e8-c0e8-49af-980f-9eb6686f42d21033.mspx#EDEAC
If I follow the steps to get to "Speakers Properties" (for me it comes up as "Speakers/Headphones Properties") and click on the "Level" tab, there is a slider for "Speakers," but no sliders for the other four shown on the screenshot: "Phone Line, Line In, Aux, Microphone."
Since these are not present, I can't un-mute the "Line in" as suggested.
How do I get these sliders and buttons to appear?
Norm
