Question:Just this morning suddenly I can't open Windows Vista. Nothing has changed on my Gateway laptop computer. I own a valid copy of Vista but the message in the lower right corner of my screen says that "This copy of Windows is not genuine."
Answer 1:
Is it prompting you to reactivate it?
Being that it is a Gateway machine it likely was installed using the generic key from Gateway with no activation required.
You can try rearming Vista for activation -
"Ensure your system time is correct and Re-arm you machine, which will reset the trusted time to the current system time and then install SP2. To rearm run "slmgr.vbs -rearm" from elevated command prompt. (Note that you can only do 3 rearms on the same Vista installation!)" - from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/itprovistasp/thread/f2fbd0c3-b340-4f50-96af-cf53f7347670/
If you will have the factory install this will likely not do anything for you.
Also, if you have a Beta of SP1 or SP2 install it may have finally expired. in which case you need to uninstal the beta update and install the current version.
You can contact Gateway. They will likely tell you to do a factory restore.
