No Desktop Icons/ Start/Task Menu -- automatically open Documents Folder

Question:

When my computer starts up, the "MY DOCUMENTS" folder is automatically open on my screen and there is no Start/Task Bar at the bottom and no Desktop Icons. Only my background photo is present behind the My Documents open folder. If I close the My Documents folder, I just have my background on the screen and cannot do anything. This occurs in all accounts, and in Safe Mode, and after performing a System Restore.

Fortunately, I am able to access all of my documents, programs, internet, etc. through the folders, but this is very difficult and highly inconvenient to navigate. As a precaution, I have backed up all of my important files.

I have done all of the following:

System Restore to a previous date
run in Safe Mode
created a New Account
went back to the Last Known Good Configuration
attempted to manually make changes through Control Panel

I am using Windows XP- Home Edition and have never had a problem like this before.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Answer 1:

Hello TamMc,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Answers Forum.  Had you installed any new programs or tweaks immediately prior to this starting?  Since you have taken the steps that you have already the next thing we need to make sure of is that are no viruses or malware causing this.  I am going to give you a link to a Sticky Post in the Security and Privacy Forum.  Pay close attention to the Microsoft MVP's suggestions and follow their steps.  Here is the link:

Answer 2:I'm having the same issue on my laptop, only i'm using windows vista home premium. I've done everything I can think of, even running norton antivirus multiple times to see if there are any viruses causing this. There were no viruses or malware whatsoever. I can barely access anything. In the control panel, you can access the "personalization" but cannot access the "start menu and task bar" which is where I need to go. The desktop is enabled to run on startup, yet it does not. What do I do?

Answer 3:I too am having the same problem as j355 above.  i have been working on this computer for hours now and still haven't had any success.  i've even been on the phone with a friend of mine (who is a computer geek) and we're not having any luck.  he's going to call me back when he's not driving.  please help all of us that are having these issues.  this is only one of several forums (or q&a's) about this particular subject.  so i'm guessing that there's an issue with vista (not sure about the person with windows xp but all the others I've read about have been with Vista)
