Question:Hello!
I'm new to this, and perhaps this might not be the right place for this issue, but maybe someone knows something!
I've been trying to install Vista Business on a Dell XPS 1530 laptop, and when I boot from the DVD, I successfully get the screen where you must choose your language, etc, but it either freezes or there is no response from the keyboard or mouse. This is odd because I was able to "press any key to boot from the CD".
There is nothing connected to the computer USB-wise; I'm only using the built-in touchpad and keyboard.
Also, the hard drive is totally unallocated except for the one "Dell Utility" Partition.
The computer initially came with Ubuntu 8.04, and I acquired Vista through my school's "Academic Alliance" thing.
Can anything be done about this?
Thanks for any input!
Answer 1:
Hello, Nubpower
Thank you for using the Answers Forum!
Check your computer settings and see if there is a Legacy USB mode, if there is, try enabling it. If available, you can try an external keyboard and mouse.
Let us know if this helps.

Answer 2:Hello,
Thanks for the response!
Unfortunately, I've already tried a USB trackball and it doesn't light up nor work during the Windows setup. There aren't any PS/2 ports on the computer either.
And I searched the BIOS settings as you suggested and only found "USB Emulation", which seemed promising but appeared to already be enabled. There's a setting about waking up the computer from standby with USB devices too.
I've found very few others across the internet with the same problem, and they resolved it by removing some piece of hardware that the setup didn't like. However, in my case this is a laptop and that would be quite difficult! Could this be an unresolvable hardware issue?
Answer 3:Contact Dell... I know Dells have something in the BIOS (I totally do not recall what it's called) that prevents access to the Hard Drive when installing a new operating system.
This link might help give you some insight...sorry if it does not
