SP2 - checking whether installed

Question:I run Vista Home Premium. I have had a software problem to do with Vista, so someone suggested I get SP2.

On the Microsoft website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791#Method1) it says to check whether it's already installed. I have auto updates turned on, this I checked; and so it says I should already have SP2. However, when I open Computer -> Properties the System screen that comes up, it says under Windows Edition it should make reference to SP2, which it does not.

I don't see how I could not have the Service Pack if I have auto updates on? And I am wary of installing it if I already have it, as the Microsoft website warns to check you don't have it, before installing it.

And if I don't have it is it possible I have SP1 because my computer's about 1 year old? I know it says you need to install SP1 before SP2.

I'm just a bit confused as to how I could not have it, and very wary of installing SPs and playing around if I already have them and so it might cause me bigger problems.

Would hugely appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

Answer 1:

Hello, Laura

Thank you for using the Answers Forum!

It should list if you have either Service Pack in the System screen, it will say the Windows Vista version, with the Copyright message right below, and then it should say Service Pack 1 or 2.

If it doesn't, another place you can check is go to Start, type "System Information" in the search box and open the System Information program. On the System Summary in the Version field, it should say something similar to "6.0.6002 Service Pack 1 or 2 Build 6002"

If not, it is quite strange that SP1 isn't installed at the very least with automatic updates set. J

You can download Service Pack 1 and 2 at the following links:

Service Pack 1: Download the Stand-Alone Update: 32bit | 64bit
Service Pack 2: Download the Stand-Alone Update: 32bit | 64bit

We look forward to hearing back from you.

David

Answer 2:Hi David,

Thanks for your reply.

In System Summary, Version field, it says "6.0.6000 Build 6000" - so does this mean the SP is not installed?

It does seem strange, I checked auto updates, and my computer frequently installs updates when shutting down - so I have always assumed it works fine. I don't know is there perhaps a setting choosing which auto updates to install?

Thanks again.

Answer 3:According to that build you do not have SP1 or SP2 installed, so you need both.

HOWEVER software problems are not always helped, and some times made worse, by installing service packs.

What is the software and what is the problem you are having with it. 32 bit or 64 bit system? x86 = 32 bit
