Question：Windows update encounters an unknown error when trying to install .NET Framework 3.5. I am running Vista

You can try to download .net framework 3.5 manually and install it from Microsoft website :

If you are facing issues only with installing updates for .net framework, you may go ahead and follow these steps:
1. Follow the steps mentioned in the article

NOTE: You can download the cleanup utility mentioned in the method 2 of the above mentioned article from
http://cid-6e60f9c3f18900f8.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Dotnet%20Framework/dotnetfx%7C_cleanup%7C_tool.zip
After following the article, try to install the updates.
If case you are facing issues with installing any updates from windows update, you may follow these steps:
| 1. Download the latest windows installer 4.5 from the link mentioned below and install it on the computer Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu | 1.7 MB |
2. If step 1 fails, you may go ahead with the steps mentioned in the below mentioned article

Answer 3：Thankyou for your help. I decided to format the computer and start again, I don't seem to have any problems yet, Windows Update seems to be operating normally again.
