Window vista business 32 bit automatic update not installing SP1

Question:I have Window vista business 32 bit on Sony Vaio notebook. My window automatic update is on, many updates have been installed, I do not find SP1.  I have checked for updates, have seen the "view update history" but do not find SP1.  System basic information shows no service pack. "Winver" shows Version 6.0 (Building 6000). All other window updates have been installed except "Microsoft SQL Server2005 Express edition service pack 3 (KB955706) which is continually failing to install, do not know for what reason. I presume there is no link between SQL failure and SP1. This is after complete reinstallation of Vista 3-4 days back.

Before reinstallation i.e. in the original version, Vista SP1 was automatically installed through Window update.
I wonder whether SP1 is already installed but not being shown or I have to manually download and install it.

Hi goyalvimal,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Let's follow the following steps to install the Service Pack successfully.

Step 1: Rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders.

1.     Click Start, type services.msc and hit enter.

2.     From the list of services, right click and stop the following services: Windows Update, Cryptographic Service, Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

3.     Click Start, type %windir% and hit enter.

4.     Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder as OLDSD.

5.     Open System32 folder and rename the Catroot2 folder. If fails, then try to rename it in safe mode.

6.     Start the stopped services.

Step 2: Put the computer in clean boot i.e. disable all the non Microsoft services. The purpose of disabling all the non Microsoft services is to avoid the interruption of these services during the installation of the service pack.
      1. Follow Step 1: Perform a clean boot in the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Step 3: Try scanning for the service pack 1 via windows update site, if fails, then download SP 1 standalone package and install it.
1.  Visit the following link to download SP 1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en
2.      Open the SP 1 file and install it.
3.      Restart the computer once SP 1 is installed.

Step 4: Enable all the non Microsoft services.

1.      Click Start, type msconfig and hit enter.

2.      Under General tab, select "Normal Startup" option and then click ok.

3.      Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

NOTE: If the SP installation fails in the clean boot, then you may try to install the SP in safe mode.

Let me know if this worked.

All the best!

Thanks and Regards:

Seek your guidance on step 1> point 4 : How to open System 32 folder and what (re)name should be given to catroo2folder.
Step 2 i.e. clean boot is needed before implementing step 1?
After installation of SP1, do I need to rename the folders to original name or SP1 will do it automatically.

Answer 3:

Hi goyalvimal,

Click Start, type %windir% and hit enter.
Under Windows folder, open System32 folder and rename the Catroot2 folder as OLDCR2.

Yes, I would recommend to put the computer in clean boot, the purpose is to avoid the interruption of non Microsoft services during the installation of the SP.
After installing SP 1, you don't have to rename the folders back as the folders will be automatically created when you visit the Windows updates site.

All the best!
