"Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pak 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0x86 (KB963707)" FAILED, error code 80070663

Question:Hello Soumik,

I have a similar issue with these updates. I got windows live updates to upgrade my system (windows vista 32 bits, service pack1 ) to windows vista 32 bits, service pack2. I upgraded my system.  After some time I got new updates "Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pak 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0x86 (KB963707)"  but these updates are not being successfully installed and I am getting a message that some updates were not installed, error found error code 80070663. Could you please tell me that how to install these updates. What could be the reason of such error? Is it because of upgradation from sp1 to sp2? Should I cancel the upgradation update (from sp1 to sp2)?

Thanks

Answer 2:

Hi R.Singh,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Answers forum. Try the steps below.

Step 1: As you have already tried to install that update, it could be partially installed. Hence, let's first remove it. To remove it, go to control panel -> Programs/Features. Click on 'Installed updates' on the left pane. Highlight the update and uninstall it.

Step 2: If you are unable to remove that update or if you are unable to see the update, download the windows installer clean up utility from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Install the tool and run it. Remove the update if you find it.

Step 3: Try running the following commands in an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click 'Run as administrator'. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue. At the command prompt, type the following commands one by one and press ENTER after every command.

-      net stop wuauserv

-      net stop bits

-      net stop cryptsvc

-      ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

-      ren %Windir%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

Exit from the command prompt. Restart the computer.

Step 3: Download and save the standalone update(x86 version) package from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cecc62dc-96a7-4657-af91-6383ba034eab&displaylang=en

Step 4: Install the update with the help of the executable file that we downloaded in the previous step.

Step 5: After the installation, restart the computer again and now run the commands in an elevated command prompt. Press ENTER after every command.

-      net start wuauserv

-      net start bits

-      net start cryptsvc

Exit from the command prompt. Now, if you go to windows update, you would not be offered this update.

The reason for the error: You might have damaged files in 'Catroot2' or 'SoftwareDistribution' folders. The error is not related to the installation of service pack 2.

Hope this information helps.

Thanks and regards,

Soumik

Answer 3:Hello Soumik,

thanks
