Upgrade from 32 to 64 Vista Ultimate

Question:My Dell XPS desktop came with OEM Vista Home Premium 32 installed.

I have just purchased Ultimate Upgrade and want to install the 64 bit version.

However, when I try running the Install while running the 32 bit Vista, I get an error message saying the Installer cannot run on the existing OS. And if I try re-booting from the DVD, I get an error message the Upgrade licence version requires that I start with the existing OS running.

I did go ahead and install the Ultimate 32 version, which is what I am running now. (But I still get the same messages when trying to install the 64 bit version.)

On the Install Options web page, the "solution" offered to using an "Upgrade" software license, is to do a clean install of Windows XP! And then install Vista. But I don't have any version of XP.

Is there another solution to these Catch-22's?

David.

PS: Even though I have the "Alert Me" box checked - I am not being alerted when someone replies. Is there a solution to this?

Answer 1:

You can not change a 32bit Windows version to a 64bit version by doing an Upgrade; it has to be a cleam install using a Full Version of Vista 64bit.

A 32bit Ultimate Upgrade will work, as it is upgrading a 32bit version.

Answer 2:I get that now.

And I assume this is strictly a marketing decision, since the only reason it won't re-boot from the DVD is because of the license key. But my feeble mind can't really understand why a product that is sold in the same box with the same name isn't functional. They are actually being sold as 2 different products with no 32 to 64 "Upgrade" allowed.

And just to be a touch picky. As I understand the website - IF my computer had been shipped with an OEM of XP (instead of Vista), then apparently I would have been allowed to do the change with the Upgrade license. So I don't understand the logic of being prevented from doing this with an installed Vista version.

Above is all the Installation choices for 64bit installation versions of Windows Vista.
