thumbnails and vista ultimate

Question: I had problems last week with media player in Vista Business so, on the advise from here, I upgraded. Everything went relativley smoothly, until this morning.  Media and Expressions work fine. However, I have back-up images that I download in RAW from the canon and in the past that has not been a problem to view in 'my pictures'.

The problem is that when I load the files to view thumnails, only the jpeg ones are shown. What is even stranger is that the first second or two, the raw images are flashed onto the thumnail then disappear behind a 'camera' image.  As these things have been backed up according to location and dates, I really do not want them all dumped into photoshop, but prefer to keep them on my backup drive.

I have downloaded updates from photoshop, but is there something else that I should know about reading RAW with this new super duper does everything version?
Thank you
Kate

Answer 1: Hi Kate,

I would like for you to clear the thumbnail cache. Clearing the thumbnail cache will empty the cache and not delete it. The cache will rebuild itself as Vista reloads the thumbnail images for the icons back into the cache as you navigate through your folders.

To clear the thumbnail cache:

  1. Open the Start Menu
  2. Type disk cleanup in the Start Search area and press Enter
  3. Uncheck all the boxes except for the Thumbnails box and click OK
  4. Navigate to your pictures folder and see if this resolves your issue

In order for Vista to generate thumbnails for RAW picture files, codecs are needed as RAW formats are proprietary to your camera make and model. The following link will give you more information along with the ability to download the codec for your Canon.

Please let us know if this helps or if you have any questions.

Answer 2:Matt: I have the same problem. Vista Ultimate SP-2, Canon RAW codec v1.5.

JPG thumbnails show up OK in all applications and directories. However when opening a folder of RAW files (.CR2), the thumbnails appear for a second or less and are immediately replaced by an icon.

I've deleted all thumbnails per your instructions above. I've also made certain the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" and "Display file icon on thumbnails" are unchecked in the Folder Options, View tab.

Possibly (likely?) related is a similar problem with thumbnails of .CR2 files in Windows Live Photo Gallery. When I first download images from a camera using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the thumbnails appear as expected in the application. If I exit Windows Live Photo Gallery and then open it, the thumbnails are replaced by icons. JPG thumbnails display OK.
