Vista won't update to SP2 - but thinks it has.

Question:Hi

What's happening is -

  • I run the SP2 installer (which Update says is only 6mb by the way)
  • I get the warning to close all programs and that it might take several reboots
  • When I click Next , the dialogue IMMEDIATELY disappears and I get Windows Update saying it's been successfully installed (and I mean immediately)
  • I view Update History and it reports successful install but there is no trace of anything being updated elsewhere like in System Properties or Installed Updates
  • I run Windows Update and it offers to install SP2 again

Have repeated several times - see screenshot:

I'm running a Lenove 3000 N500

Any help greatly appreciated

Answer 1:Hi sra55,

.

I suggest removing al instances of the SP2 update from the installed updates category.
You can then download and install the manual update install file.

I suggest turning off your anti-virus and malware software while you attempt the install.

To manually install SP2 by using the Microsoft Download Center

1.

Depending on whether you are running the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, download the update for 32-bit versions or download the update for 64-bit versions .

Note To determine whether you have the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, click the Start button Picture of the Start button , right-click Computer , and then click Properties .
2.

To install SP2 immediately, click Open or Run , and then follow the instructions on your screen. To install SP2 later, click Save to copy the installation file to your computer. When you're ready to install the service pack, open the file you copied to your computer.

3.

Follow the instructions on your screen. The computer might restart several times during the installation.

4.

After Setup is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon prompt. You will receive a message indicating whether the update was successful.

Please let us know if this helps.
Chris

thanks for the reply
After waiting an eternity for the huge download I ran it. This time it did seem to be doing something, but after a few minutes I got an error on the screen:

Installation was not successful
The referenced assembly is not installed on your system

ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_NOT_FOUND(0X800736B3)
