HP Photosmart C5180 will not print.

Question:I have installed from HP directly at least 3 times driver and software for printer.  It will not show printer connected to computer by USB Port.  I have Window Vista.  I was using same printer previously on Window Vista on an Dell Inspiron 530. I got another computer with the same set up and it would not install with the CD.  Therefore, I went to HP and downloaded it.  I did get to the point that it listed it as by default printer but when you tried to print a test page if would give an error failed to print. I would therefore have to delete the document.  I feel it has something to do with Window Vista and I have ran all my recent window updates.  Anyone have any suggestions? I have uninstalled the printer and softeware for the 3rd time.  Help!

Answer 1:When you "installed" the software, was the Printer plugged into the USB Port?
Normally the Printer should NOT be plugged in during Software installation.  HP Printer software is pretty good about telling you when it wants you to plug in the printer to the USB Port.

Have you tried a different USB Port (after software installation of course)?

I have a HP All in One Printer and its working perfectly on Vista, however, I've not tried it using USB since it's a Network printer (has a built in Ethernet Port....I love it).

Answer 2:Thanks for the response.  Yes I did have USB cable unplugged from both printer and computer.  In the installation (twice) it will get to the point to request for you to plug in cable to printer and then to computer.  When I do that, it will not recognize printer and I have to elect to connect later and continue installation.  I did try two different USB Cables and it happened both times.  I do have a ethernet port on the printer.  Will that work fine for one computer and not a network? I have not tried that.  I had another computer with vista and it worked fine too.

Thanks!

Hi GetSmart101

Thank you for Posting on Microsoft Answers.

Yes, you can try that, if you have a Ethernet Switch to plug the computer and Printer in to (or a Router).
During the install of the printer, choose Network Installation.

My HP Printer at Home is a Network Printer (All-in-one OfficeJet) and since I have multiple computers, it made perfect sense to use the Network capabilities of it.  Now I do not need to "share" the printer on a computer :)

Please Post back and let us know how it goes. - thank you

Ken
