Question:SP2 was released 2 days ago for my languages, but installation reverts after reboot and step 3/3 on Vista Ultimate 32 bits, tried twice with 2 different downloads.
I have all language packs installed, BitDefender Antivirus 2009, AnyDVD HD and NetDrive (webdav network share drive mapping tool).
I uninstalled AnyDVD HD and NetDrive, ran the System Update Readiness Tool and will try the standalone SP2 after uninstalling all language packs (takes several hours!). If this still does not work, I'll try uninstalling BitDefender as a last recourse.
The error code 8007000e does not however seem related to the applications but to a lack of memory. I have 4GB of RAM and 120GB of free HD space.
Any idea what could cause this error?
I suspect the language packs could be responsible, they take 20+GB of HD space, and I don't know how well SP2 supports them.
I saw on the web some posts about MSIs leaking memory, wonder if that could be it: A memory leak might not be significant if you install SP2 on a mono- or bilingual system, but could be fatal if you have 20-30 languages installed. (Just trying to figure out what's the problem.)
UPDATE 07/03 1:25AM: Nice try, now the language packs won't even uninstall, error 0x8000ffff, repro when I try uninstalling all LPs except the system one, or any low-level LP one by one, such as Thai.
Answer 1:
Hi Chimel,
Thank you for using the Community Forums for Vista.
1) Currently, there is only one stand-alone package available for Windows Vista SP2. This package contains the following five languages:
English
French
German
Japanese
Spanish
Additional packages that contain all 36 language versions of Windows Vista SP2 will be available in the future.

2) Please try the following steps to install Vista Service pack 2 if it is offered through windows updates,
Ref: How to troubleshoot Windows Vista service pack installation issues: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366
Ref: You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
Step 1: Close or disable any applications that may be running.
Step 2: Uninstall any security applications.
Step 3: Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on, and temporarily disable third-party firewalls.
Step 4: Disable software accelerator programs.
Step 5: Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list.
Step 6: Remove entries for Windows Update and Microsoft Update from the hosts file.
Step 7: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration.
3) Regarding uninstall of language pack and error 0x8000ffff, follow the below mentioned steps.

2. Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.
3. In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press Enter:
chkdsk /r
4. You should see the following on-screen messages:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
5. Type Y and restart the computer.
Step 3: Install the hotfix from the link; A hotfix is available to reinstall a corrupted language pack and to resolve the problems that are caused by a corrupted language pack on a Windows Vista-based computer: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947506
Step 4: Uninstall the language packs one by one by following the steps,
Click Start, type language options in the Start Search box, and then click Regional and Language Options in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
Click the Keyboards and Languages tab, and then click Install/uninstall languages in the Display language area.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
Click Remove languages, click to select the check boxes for the language packs that you want to remove, and then click Next.

Answer 2:Update 07/07: SP2 install successful!!!
Naveen, the standalone SP2 installer with all languages was officially available for download the day before I tried to install it.
The resolution:
The language packs (Vista Ultimate) were the cause of the SP2 install failure.
I tried to select and uninstall all of them in one go, but Windows would not let me: After a couple of hours or more processing all languages, it said none of the LPs could be uninstalled.
That was on a clean boot machine, with all startup and non-MS services disabled in msconfig, machine rebooted, Task Manager checked for any user or system suspicious task.
I ran KB947506, this unblocked partially the LP uninstall. I could not uninstall 2 or more simultaneously, but at least I could uninstall the LPs one by one. That worked even with all the antivirus and other startup and non-MS services enabled.
So I did just that and rebooted after every 10 LPs uninstalled or so, until all LPs were removed. A couple of them failed uninstall at first, but uninstalled fine on second attempt. The standalone SP2 installer then installed without any error. Again, all antivirus and other services/drivers were enabled during SP2 install.
More details and feedback have been escalated to MS support already.
Hope this helps!
