[Answer]Bad Update

Question:I guess this week was a bad time to upgrade to a 64 bit vista os.  I installed the os and all the drivers last night. After I installed and got my security software going I set the computer to update and install them. Now my computer (Dell Studio 16) will not boot. I can't get in with safe mode and it will not let me reinstall windows again. When trying to boot in safe mode I get a blue screen I cant read because it is so quick and then a page that says windows failed to load. When I tried to reinstall with os cd the computer read the cd and loaded file but then goes black. No action after that. So what can I do? Called Dell and they want me to buy a $300 software warrenty before they will help.

Answer 1:I have an update.  I learned from the Dell site how to capture the blue screen.  The error was caused by unmoutable_boot_volume. I researched it at dell and it lead my to a test the system using the diagnostic (push F12 on start up). Now I have an error of 2000-0146. Called Dell and now they are sending a tech to replace my harddrive. Now i still have to installed my os. Is the bad update still out there or has microsoft removed it yet?

Answer 2:Hi Acts29jason,

I would like to give you some information about the Blue Screen error which you get:

1.The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.

2.You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.

3.The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.

4. It may also be an issue with the Hard drive.

The updates are not the reason for this issue to occur. If not now, this would have happened after a year or two due to the hardware. If it was'nt a problem with the hardware we could have booted from the Windows Vista disk and we could have then done a System Restore or a check disk. Since we are not able to boot from the Windows Vista disk we can say that it is an issue with the hardware most likely the hard disk.

I have a KB article which addresses this issue, however this article is related to Windows XP, however I think it would apply for Windows Vista as well. As it has troubleshooting steps like check disk which we would have tried if we could boot from the Windows Vista disk.
