Question：Device Manager indicates that the Microsoft lifecam vx-5000 i working properly but the icon has disappeared from my desktop and I cannot find how to turn on the camera without opening Messenger like i was able to do before - to take pictures or sound bytes without being online with anyone.

It seems that you are looking for the shortcut icon of the webcam software which was somehow deleted from the desktop.
If you remember the name, I will recommend checking for the same under the programs list.
You can follow the given steps:
1. Click on Start and then Click on All Programs.
2. Browse through the list and search for the Webcam Application.
3. Once you find the Application name, Right click on the application and click on Create Shortcut.
4. Check if you have the Application shortcut icon back on the desktop.

Sorry for the delayed response. The software needed to be reinstalled. The program was mysteriously uninstalled, quite possibly the result of an auto update gone awry.
