Hi monicahg,
Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forums.
We will need to first check if the internal speakers are set as defaults, try the below steps to check if its default:
Click on start and later on control panel and then on sound, you would get a dialog box look under the "Playback" tab if the speakers are selected as default device.
First of all try uninstalling and reinstalling the sound adapter
Method 1: uninstalling the drivers from the Device manager
1. Click start
2. Type devmgmt.msc
3. Within Sound video and game controller you will find the the sound adapter right click on it and select the option uninstall.
4. Restart the computer and check.
Method 2 : Uninstalling the drivers from programs and features
1. Click start
2. Type appwiz.cpl
3. Search for the sound driver package and uninstall the package
4. Restart the computer and check.
Method 3 : Install the latest version of the sound card driver from the manufacturer's website.
