Question: I have a notebook that I am trying to install Vista on but the product key on the bottom of the notebook is rubbed to the point that I cannot make out one of the characters. Is there any way to determine what the missing character is based on the rest of the key code?
Answer 1: There is no limit to the number of 'tries' that setup allows. There are only 36 alphaNumeric tries to make for one character.
What I would do is put in any character for the setup, then run the authentication dialog and choose the 'phone in' option, which allow changing the key and closing the phone in, to try online with that key

Answer 2:Craig Dedon,
Although you have not stated it, if you are attempting to reinstall and you are still able to boot into a vista environment you can recover the product key from the system files.
Method 1:
Click Start, in Start Search type "System" click the exact result.
A window with "view basic information about your computer" will open. under Windows activation you will find Product ID and your Key listed next to it.
Method 2:
use your favorite search engine to find 3rd party key finder utilities. (you accept sole responsibility for any 3rd party software you choose to download and run on your computer, make sure you validate the security of any software you choose to run by researching its authenticity.)
Let us know if you require further assistance.

Answer 3:I have tried all possible combination for the missing character but none of them work. It could be that one of the other characters is partially rubbed out and only looks like another character. I have looked closely at the label with a magnifying glass and am almost positive that the code that I am entering is the code on the label. Is there any support line I can call to have the activation code verified for me?
