[Answer]Microsoft media

Question:Had to reinstall Vista as had some problems with video freezing on startup.  Now, I'm not able to play videos, although the sound comes up when I choose Windows Media to play my videos.  Tried to update but it won't let me as it says it's not compatible, and can't download a newer version as they all say they are for XP and not Vista.  Help  Thank you
Val

Answer 1:

 Hi valsurbey,

 1. Are you able to watch videos with other players?

 2. May I know your Computer Manufacturer?

 3. Is it 32bit/64bit Vista?

Find the manufacturer and type of your video card

Normally you can find this information in the manual of your computer (look for technical specifications) or in Windows itself:

Right-click on the desktop and select "Properties"

In the Display Properties window, click on the "Settings" tab

Your video card manufacturer and chipset type is mentioned on the "Display:" line

Look for the names (ex: NVIDIA, ATI, Intel)

Go to your Manufacturer's website, download and install the latest drivers for your type of video card.

Note: If your computer is a laptop, we highly recommend that you visit the manufacturer's support/driver download page as they often provide specialized drivers for your system. Also, it is not uncommon that the official drivers from the video card Manufacturer do not support your graphics chipset.

If that does not work post back with the brand and model of the video card so that we can help you troubleshoot further.

You can also post us Vendor ID and device ID of your display driver.

1. Go to start--> type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

2. In the device manager right click on the display driver and select properties.

3. Click on the details tab and make a note of the Vendor ID and device ID present in the window.

If the issue is only with Windows Media Player, it could be a codec problem.

Please follow the link http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0079.mspx   and see about downloading some new codec's and reading the information that is given about using codec's.

Regards,
Amritha-Microsoft support.
