Hi HI surfer,
Welcome to Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.
Please answer the following questions, so that I can assist you better.
1. Which is the edition of Windows Vista installed on the computer?
2. Do you have any security software installed on the computer?
Try the following steps to install SP 2 successfully.
Stop the services pertaining to Windows Update.
1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.
2. If you receive a notification from User Account Control simply click Continue.
3. At the command prompt, type the following commands and then press ENTER after each command.
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
4. Please do not close the Command Prompt window.
Rename folders pertaining to Windows Update
At the command prompt, type the following commands and then press Enter after each command:
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Start services pertaining to Windows Update.
net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc
Close the Command Prompt window.
Download the SP 2 standalone package file: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx
Start the computer in safe mode and open the SP 2 downloaded file to install it.
To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
Once SP 2 is installed, then restart the computer in the normal mode.
Let me know if this worked.
All the best!
Thanks and Regards:

Answer 3:Ahemd Syed: You asked me what version of VISTA I am running-VISTA Home. Your steps have failed me also. 1. I downloaded the SP2 stand alone. Diabled automatic updates. 2. I also downloade the vista systems repair tool. After numerous tries, taking the PC off line. turning off my NAV it installed. AND waiting 20 mins with no indication that the program is installing, it installed complete. run?? because there is no indicators or program that inidicate its installing or running. 3. Following your instructions doesn't work. VISTA safe mode will not allow the opening of the downloaded program.
This is not like the old days where I could unzip the files into a folder then go into safe mode to run them. I am not given the option to unpack the files and not run them. My network techs at my employment said to hold up on Vista SP2 because there is patch to come out to fix SP2. They were not joking, they said SP2 is broke. So am I am I wasting my time and continue to put up with the VISTA crashes, reloads of OS and MS office?
