Question:Why should we have to go to outside sources to get codecs? Why doesn't MS provide new codecs in their Updates as new ones come out?

Can't help you with the "why"...but maybe it would be worth
a try to download and install the Vista Codec Package:

Also...the free VLC Media Player can be useful also:

Answer 2:Hello CaliRefugee,
Thank you for posting. I have additional information for you. WMP 11 will play mp4 files without codecs but you won't be able to add them to the library. What you need is a Tag Support Plug-in for Windows Media Player. This Plug-in will allow mp4 files to be added to the library of Media Player. I've included a link to WMP plug-ins forum with more information on it.

Please let me know if it helps you.

Answer 3:Not only do they not provide the codec for MP4, but even if you did have the MP4 codec, the progress slider wont work in Windows Media Player with MP4 files. IOW you cant change position within the movie, clicking the slider always makes an MP4 movie jump back to the beginning. Not too good if you are already an hour into the film, you have to watch that hour all over again. MP4 files also jump to 00:00 when you click FastForward and Rewind, Windows Media Player is buggy with the very-popular MP4 files. Too bad because many newer video cameras as well as HD content on YouTube is MPEG-4.
