KB955706 Update Failed Again

Question:After several months of having windows update ignore KB955706 "SQL Express Edition SP3" it is back again.
Two (2) questions:
Am I missing any functionality by not being able to run SQL Express Edition?
Is this update back because of some critical issue?
I have tried the various remedies specified in other threads posted here, but like those people, I too have been unable to get this update to "take."

Answer 1:

I found my answer.
I searched microsoft.com for answers about this failure of KB955706 to install when using "windows update."
There were no answers for XP Pro and Vista (which are the platforms I am having trouble with. But, the guys at MicroSoft EBS (Esstential Business Server) are aware of the KB955706 install failure on their platform. As explained at:

http://blogs.technet.com/essentialbusinessserver/archive/2009/05/06/sql-2005-sp-3-kb-955706-fails-to-install-on-the-ebs-management-server.aspx

So, emailed them regarding the problem I have had for several months with KB955706 install failures. These fine people directed me to a way to install "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3". Please note they said "EXPRESS EDITION" and not "SQL Sever 2005 SP3" which is an entirely different product/platform.  It seems most people are being directed to install "SQL Server 2005 SP3" the platform and not "SQL Server 2005 EXPRESS EDITION SP3" the application for XP and Vista.

To obtain SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3181842a-4090-4431-acdd-9a1c832e65a6&displaylang=en

I used the 32-bit for the XP Pro computer.
The EBS techs also directed me to a "Mr Fixit" that adjusted Windows Update to reflect a proper install. I did not bookmark this unfortunately.

I now have SQL Server 2005 EXPRESS EDITION as a new program on both Vista and XP Pro running. Windows Update no longer continously downloads and fails to install KB955706.
Express Edition of SQL Server 2005 handy little program that I now have. Express Edition is explained here:

http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express.aspx

I am going to name my kid "The Super Techs at MicroSoft Essential Business Systems" khatter.
I hope others with KB955706 install failures may benefit from my long and frustrating saga.
Thank you.
-khatter
