Question:Windows Update install ran this morning and now I have no audio input device installed. It was functioning fine before this latest install. This is a Windows Vista 64 bit system. What do I do to get my audio device back?
Answer 1:
Hi mstraley,
Thank you for posting on the Microsoft Answers Community Forums.
Did you try installing all optional hardware updates meant for your system at the windows update page?
The first you have to check whether there is an updated version of the sound driver available from the manufacturer. If there is one, download the driver and uninstall the present driver you have on the computer and install the latest one.
If that doesn't resolve the issue then go to Windows Updates and view update history. Find the updates that you installed prior to the issue and uninstall the updates. Then check and see if you can see the screen properly. If you can see it correctly, then download and install each update one at a time, checking between each update to see if you can get the monitor settings right. That way we can determine if the Windows Update have caused the problem with the screen.
You can also try doing a system restore prior to installing these updates.
To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type system restore in the Start Search box, and then click System Restore in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
- In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
- In the list of restore points, click a restore point that was created before you began to experience the issue, and then click Next.
- Click Finish.
The computer restarts, and the system files and settings are returned to the state that they were in at the time that the restore point was created.

After system restore try installing windows updates one by one. Find out the update which is causing this to happen and let us know.
Hope this helps.

Answer 2:Thanks for the information - actually during a live chat session with another Microsoft trouble shooter he took control of my computer and the problem was resolved. And you were right what needed to be done was just reinstall the sound blaster driver from Device Manager. Everything seems to be working correctly now.
Thank you for the prompt help with this issue. I have also printed off your response but it contained good reference information if problems arise in the future.
