Thumbnails appear and Disappear

Question:

If her problem is like mine,  When you open a folder with pictures in it, as the thumbnails load it shows the picture.  When page is finished loading, the pictures revert back to the default.  Sometime all of them, sometimes a few remain.  Sometimes if  you scroll up or down, they will reappear momentarily then disappear again.  If you change the thumbnail size, they will reappear until the page is done loading and then disappear again.  Very frustrating.  I am using a brand new Dell laptop with Windows Vista 64 bit.

Answer 1:Hi podvininc,

Just to let you know, I have split this post off of http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistamedia/thread/c91aca81-b453-4f2b-98cc-bb2ee4feb077/

since it was a new issue and not the original customer's issue.

Here is a suggestion that was given in the link above.

  1. Open the Start Menu
  2. Right-Click on Computer and select Properties and a new window will open
  3. Select Advanced System Settings on the left under Tasks
  4. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt
  5. Click on the Advanced tab and select Settings... under the Performance area
  6. Under Visual Effects you will see four options to choose from
  7. Let Windows choose what's best for my computer usually works best for most users
  8. Verify that Show thumbnails instead of icons is checked or you can select Adjust for best appearance and press OK
  9. This may take some time to change

Since, I know that you have reviewed this information, I am curious because if you have Windows Choosing what is the best for the computer, it could be that the performance of the system would be altered if thumbnails show with the high performance specifications.

One option that you could try is

Boot into a clean boot state - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Perform Step 1 of the procedure then check if your thumbnails work properly.
If so move on to Step 2 and try again.
Follow the steps outlined until the offending service/program is identified.  Post that information into the forum and let's see if it is due to background programs/services that Windows selects to reduce the output for the thumbnails for.

Please continue to post your information into this forum thread.

Best regards,

Debbie
