Windows update error... new kb972036

Question:Hi,

I have a client with a PC (Athlon X2 5600, 3GB RAM) running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1.  Now, I just UPGRADED the system from Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1 on Thursday last week.  As a side note it too 14 HOURS!!?? to do it.  There have been some minor issues, but it seems to generally run OK.  Today, it asked to install the v2 of kb972036 through Windows Update.  I said OK and it tried and failed several times.  I then went to Programs & Features, found the old kb972036 update and said to uninstall it... no luck; it failed.

So, now what?  is there some special way to remove an update when Programs & Features fails.  As a side note, I have been having an AcGenral.dll error on some programs when they start (although the programs still run if I hit continue) and I was hoping that this update would fix it as it has to do with program compatibility.

Anyway... how do I get the old kb972036 out and the new in?

Answer 1:When KB972036 and KB973879 came out last week (8/25/09), it screwed up allot of systems (blue screen, etc).  The fix was to take it out, which most people did.  I just did an automatic update, and both of those files installed.  I immediately uninstalled both of them, again.  I don't know of any special way to uninstall an update except:

Go to the control panel
Click "Programs and Features"
Click "View installed updates" (Left side of screen on my system)
Locate the update you are insterested in and double click to uninstall.

Does anyone know if KB972036 and KB973879 are now safe to install?

Answer 2:

I had the problem last week with the update. After several hours of frustration I was able to get in and restore to a point before the update. Today the auto update did it again. From my limited knowledge of how to use the Event Viewer, it would seem to be KB972036 again to have caused it.

Vista Home Premium !!!!!!! I hate it.

Answer 3:I just started having the problem the other day. When my computer reboots it takes me to an error screen on startup telling me to run a repair on my windows.
it says
