Question:I am constantly losing memory on my hard drive. Whenever I check my properties on the hard drive have less free space. I do not have any games on my system. If I would down load any documents to my system I would notice free space being used. When I would delete those documents I would not get that space added back to my free space. When I do not use my system I would still lose free space. Some days it would be a few tenths of to a gb or two of space lost. I am using Vista home premium.
Answer 1:Hi Valjeantale,
I would suspect the your problem is related to system restore files being created. These are created on a daily basis and can take up quite a large chunk of space - anything up to 12% of disk space.
If your system is running well you might like to disable system restore and then re-enable it to remove all the old system restore files. See this link from my website: http://www.winuser.co.uk/windows_vista_faq/11_turn_off_system_restore.html
As well as disabling system restore you can also change the amount of space allocated for system restore. See this link from my website: http://www.winuser.co.uk/windows_vista_faq/53_decrease_storage_space-allocated_to_system_restore.html
Do be ware though that when you re-enable system restore it will create start creating new system restore points and eating into your free space. The better option is to ensure you regularly backup/image the whole of your hard drive to a removable hard drive on a regular basis. If you regularly backup/image your hard drive you can permanently disable system restore (as I do) and you will always have a up to date image to re-install if you have any problems. The best software for imaging your drive is Acronis True Image Home. Sadly you have to buy Acronis.
