Question:"Windows Update has stopped working" - exact error message. I have spent three months reading forums, searching for answers and diligently applying solutions - none of which have worked - obviously :)
This is not the BITS problem. Yes I have also tried sfc /scannow. This is not a new Vista installation. Last succesful updates were 24th January

Please, I am desperate to resolve this and finally get windows secured again - without again reinstalling Vista :)
Many thanks

Hi ms_frustrated,
.
I'd like to ask a few questions to help us focus in the right place.
When do you get the error message? Does it happen at startup or when you try to update for example?
Did this happen right after you installed, reinstalled, or upgraded to Vista?
Is this a laptop or a desktop computer?
Are you connected to the internet with a wireless network card or a wired networked card (ethernet)?
Do you have an external hard drive or external sound card?
From some of the research I've done it looks like it may be related to a hardware driver.
My first suggestion would be to check for updated Vista 64-bit drivers from the equipment manufacturers website.
Another idea would be to make sure the equipment your using is listed correctly in the Device Manager.
You could also try disconnecting and external hardware (printers, external hard drives, etc.), restart the computer and see if you still get the error message.

Answer 2:Hi Chris, many thanks for the response.
Not that simple I am afraid.
The machine is a desktop - Intel Q4. 4GB RAM, Nvidia 8600GT, wired LAN connection from the Gigabyte S series motherboard, permanently connected via broadband (remembering I run XP all the time now as only it works) VISTA was a clean install some time back, did not happen shortly after installing. No additional s/w was installed before the error occurred - only Windows updating itself.
No external devices, no ancillary device drivers. Latest drivers for everything (until around 3 months ago)
The problem is WINDOWS UPDATE. Problem occurs anytime Update is accessed INCLUDING trying to install any new s/w such as IE8 (which will not install as a result) Problem starts as soon as Windows tries to update itself & continues thereafter consistently - please refer to the original post - APPCRASH svchost.exe_wuauserv
Having established that, fully ready for suggestions :)

Have you tried Method 3: Vista at theabove link?
We have to assume you have done Method 1 and 2.
