Question:I am trying to install windows update KB955430 and constantly get to 92% and the update freezes. I get an error code of 800706BE. I have let the update run for over 3 hours and still no progress. Is this update required and if so what can I do to install it. I am not a computer genius so layman terms would be great.

Above is the direct download link for Vista 32bit KB955430, which most store bought computer are(32bit).
As you see, you will have to validate your Vista version at the above site before download.
Do a direct download/install from there.

Answer 2:Same with me.
Since 955430 showed up in the automatice update it failed -> made it a hidden update.
Vista SP2 appeared, 955430 seemed to be a prerequiste to install SP2.
Tried manually to install 955430 (after restarting): no result: freezes at 90% of installationprocess, even after 12 hours, while prcoessors still working at 50% (for what?). Then I stopped installing: Installer reacted with correct message but no action (processors still working) even after 2 hours.
Followed other preparing instructions:
chkdsk /f; sfc /scannow; checksur (kb947821): no mistakes or missing files.
Tried to install SP2 manually, no anti-virusprograms, but it started with installing 955430: same result: it again freezed at 90%.
Tried further solutions like clean boot, install Vista (Ultimate) again in upgrade mode: no positive results for installing 955430 and SP2.
Seems a serious defect which asks for solution other than Michael M proposes.
